I’ve seen a lot of people having trouble installing mods manually lately, especially people who don’t own flat Fallout 4 for reference. The information people post is usually very partial. I pieced together what I could, and everything seems to be working alright. Please let me know if I’ve missed anything!
Documents/My Games/Fallout4Vr/Fallout4VrCustom.ini
I think this file is created after running the game once, but if it doesn’t exist you can just create it. Add the following:
[Archive]
sResourceDataDirsFinal= bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
Note: I’ve seen some posts instructing people to list your modded directories for the DataDirs value, but according to flat Fallout 4’s Archive Invalidation page, doing so is unnecessary and can drastically increase loading times.
Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout 4 VR/Data/
This should be any files included with the mods, such as .esp, .esm, .ba2, or directories.
%localappdata%/Fallout4VR/Plugins.txt
which is the same as the following absolute path:
C:/Users/YOUR_USERNAME/AppData/Local/Fallout4VR/Plugins.txt
This is where a lot of people are having problems. This file doesn’t exist by default but it’s just a text file and you can create it manually.
Add the full filenames of any .esp or .esm files (including the file extension) you put in the Data/ folder in the previous step. This makes Fallout aware of those files.
And you’re done! Pretty sure that’s all the steps. It’s been working for me so far but I’ve only installed a handful of mods.
For reference, my plugins.txt looks like this:
*Insignificant Object Remover.esp
*Remove Overweight Cant Run Message.esp *Vivid Fallout – All in One – Best Choice.esp
And a bonus: If you want to tweak different settings, rather than crawling .ini files and guessing at variables I highly recommend /u/bilago‘s configuration tool, which lists all the values used in the engine and edits them for you, as well as including dedicated menus for some of the more important tweaks.
OverviewEdit
Weapon mods can be built from raw materials and attached to weapons at weapons workbenches. There are over 700 mods[1], generally including sights, barrels, stocks, receivers, magazines and more. The Gun Nut perk is required to create better modifications for guns. The Science! perk is used to create better modifications for energy weapons and create advanced modifications for bullet based firearms. The Blacksmith perk is used to create better modifications for melee weapons.
Perks and weapon modsEdit
Most firearms, including energy weapons, offer the option to customize the grip/stock, receiver and sight, changing which perks affect the weapon.
Grip mods create pistol weapons, while stock mods create rifle weapons. This allows for almost any ranged firearm to be customized to fit the player's character build.
Action Points and weapon modsEdit
This section is based on research presented in YouTuber RedMage's[1] video: 'Fallout 4: VATS and AP Formula Solved!'[2]
The FormulaEdit
Attacking from from V.A.T.S. uses up Action Points (AP). There are three numbers that determine what the AP cost is for every type of modded weapon: the weapon's base AP cost, the weapon's AP multiplier, and the mod's AP effect, and they do it based on this formula:
Each weapon has a different base value of action points that it uses per shot. For instance, a 10mm bare receiver costs 21 AP per shot in V.A.T.S., so its AP base value is 21.
Each type of weapon also has an AP multiplier that determines how much effect mods have on the AP of that type of weapon. Combat shotguns, for instance have an AP multiplier of 1.75, while laser guns have an AP multiplier of 1.25, meaning mods applied to combat shotguns will have a greater impact on AP (up or down) than mods on laser guns.
Finally, each mod has an AP effect, which is how strongly it changes the weapon's AP cost. There are some general patterns to how strongly the mods affect all gun types, but it's inconsistent. For instance, the reflex sight has a consistent -3 effect on all gun types tested, but the long barrel mod has an effect of +1 on 10mm pistols, but +4 on hunting rifles.
Weapon and mod detailsEdit

How To Manually Install Fallout 4 ModsArchive Extractors
You will need an archive extractor such as 7zip, WinRar, or other solution.
Finding Your Data Folder
This is where you will install Fallout 4 modification files.
You have now found your data folder. Remember this location.
Installing Loose files
'Loose files' refers to a mod who’s content files are separate, individually contained within an archive that must be extracted to your data folder.
That’s it! You should now be able to load the game and see the installed mod in action.
Installing Plugins
Plugins are mods that are packaged as self-contained ESP files (.esp). These plugins must be extracted to your data folder and unlike loose files, must be enabled via the plugins.txt file.
After installation, plugins must be enabled before they will be active in-game.
Enabling Plugins
Plugins, unlike loose files, must be enabled in Fallout 4 by adding them to your plugins.txt file before they are active in-game.
If you enabled modding correctly as described in the 'How to Enable Fallout 4 mod support' section at the top of this page, the mod (ESP file) you are installing will be now listed in this file, after the Fallout 4 launcher is run. If not, you may try manually add the mod to this list as a whole filename with extension (ie. yourmod.esp).
After confirming the ESP file is listed in your plugins.txt file, you are done! You should now be able to see the mod you installed active in-game.
How To Manually Uninstall Fallout 4 ModsWARNING: DO NOT REMOVE GAME FILES
Removing files from your installation directory can be risky and might result in having to reinstall the game. We recommend using Nexus Mod Manager to make the installation and removal of mods safer and easier.
Removal of loose files
Verify the files used by the mod you would like to remove by examining the original archive. Remove files you confirm to be used by the mod.
Be very careful about removing core game files that the mod may have over-written. Doing so may damage your game installation.
Removal of plugins
Removing plugins is somewhat safer than loose-files in that plugins are self-contained and will not affect the integrity of the game installation when removed.
Verify the files used by the mod you would like to remove by examining the original archive. Remove files you confirm to be used by the mod. 7 days to die do zombies get stronger free.
Deactivating Plugins
Plugins can be deactivated by modifying the plugins.txt file (as described in the installation process) and removing the line that references the plugin you wish to deactivate.
How to verify game integrity
Should you ever find yourself in need of repairing your game installation, Steam has a handy tool that will help:
In Steam, right-click the game title > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache
This will ensure that your game installation is valid and in working order, though this may disable / invalidate any mods that were installed before starting the process.

Here’s How to Get Weapons Mods in Fallout 76
With Fallout 76 out now, millions of players around the world are scavenging, murdering and partying their way through the rugged (and freshly-nuked) wasteland of West Virginia. Because of the various hazards — robots, ghouls, fabled creatures and of course, other players — players will need the best guns they can get their hands on if they want to survive. While nabbing a great gun will certainly help on the journey, it’s not until you take your weapon to the next level with a mod that you take your survival skills to the next level as well. Here’s how to get weapon mods in Fallout 76.
How to Get Weapon ModsFallout 4 How To Use Mods
There are two main ways to get these mods in Fallout 76 and fortunately, both are quite easy. The first way to obtain one requires you to do something that you will be doing time and time again in the game: scrapping weapons.
Metal gear solid v the phantom pain mods. Scrapping weapons is not only something you’ll be doing often in Fallout 76, but it’s also extremely useful and that’s because whenever you scrap a weapon at a workbench (can be any workbench), you will usually receive some sort of customization option or mod. You can use this customization option or mod to upgrade and improve your weapons.
The second way to obtain these mods requires a more keen eye and that’s because you need to be on the lookout for slightly-larger-than-a-shoe-box-sized boxes. They’re also brown and wooden.
These boxes are scattered throughout West Virginia and within, there is usually a weapon mod.
What They Do
At their most basic level, weapon mods do just that: mod the weapon. Modding a weapon usually changes not only how the weapon looks, but how it performs as well. A mod might make a weapon more powerful, give it enhanced range, a faster fire speed, make it more accurate, or something else entirely. Just know that when you mod a weapon, you are in for a drastic change.
How to Repair and Upgrade Weapons With Mods
To repair and upgrade weapons with mods, you first need to go to a workbench. Press Y or Triangle when you’re at one and this should pull up a menu about repairing and modifying weapons.
To repair, press Triangle or Y again and you should get the option to repair them if you have the materials. If you’re looking to upgrade or modify your weapon, you need to press X or A on the modification category. Then, go down the list of upgrades and modifications for the specific element of your gun you wish to upgrade or modify.
Press X or A to modify and you’re all done.
